7 QUICK FIXES FOR WHEN YOU’RE IN A FUNK

Today I don’t feel like doing anything. Nothin’ at all.

Thanks Bruno Mars. You’ve summed up how we feel today perfectly.

But waking up in a funk can have a snowball effect on our whole day. It can even roll into tomorrow! And it can impact the mood of the whole family.

So today isn’t one of the days we’re just going to write off (although those days do happen, and that’s perfectly ok!). Today, we’re going to shake off the weight of this do-nothing mood so we can move on!

Just because your day didn’t start well doesn’t mean it can’t end well. You can still have an amazing day…even if that amazing day doesn’t start until the afternoon!

Here are 7 quick ways to improve your mood so you can get back to your day.

1. OPEN ALL THE BLINDS AND CURTAINS

Let the light in!

Before you doing anything else, go straight to every window and let in the natural light. And whenever possible, make this the first thing you do in the morning.

Even on cloudy days, letting some natural light in does wonders for our mood.

It can even impact our mental and physical health!

2. DRINK A COLD GLASS OF WATER

Do you prefer ice in your water? Or do you like it room temperature?

Hydration in any form is good for our health. But to wake up from the funk, drink a big glass of COLD water.

It’ll get your adrenaline flowing.

3. PUT YOUR PHONE IN AN INCONVENIENT PLACE

I don’t know about you, but when I wake up in a funk I look at my phone a lot more. And the only thing this helps me do is procrastinate more.

So to get your motivation going, put your phone in an inconvenient place. That way when you’re tempted, it won’t be so easy to get to.

You can look at your phone all you want later. But right now, the best thing you can do is take a break from it.

4. TAKE A COUPLE OF DEEP BREATHS

I’m not talking meditation here. I’m talking oxygen.

Take 2-3 full breaths to completely fill your lungs. It’ll bring oxygen to your blood, increasing your energy and your endorphins – the “feel-good” chemical.

5. DO A QUICK STRETCH

Take a minute or two and get your blood flowing.

Bend down and reach toward your toes. Or stretch your arms above your head and lean to one side, then the other. You could even just gently twist back and forth with your hands on your hips.

You don’t have to fit in a whole workout to improve your mood. Just a few simple stretches can get the job done.

6. FRESHEN UP

Alright. Now it’s time to get out of the yoga pants.

Put on some real clothes. Rinse your face with cold water. And do something with your hair.

If you’re feeling up to it, put on some makeup. If not, it’s ok too. Today’s just one of those days.

But because it’s one of those days, you’ve got to get out of your comfy clothes. It’ll help. I promise.

7. TURN ON YOUR FAVORITE SONG

Turn on a song you are currently loving. One that energizes you.

If you don’t own the song, open YouTube and pull it up. Then turn up the volume.

Maybe that one song will be enough to break you out of your funk. Or maybe you’ll want to turn on a good Spotify playlist to keep the momentum going.

Just start with a song you absolutely love.

SO WHAT’S NEXT?

You can improve your mood by trying one of these tips or all of them. But once you’re feeling more like yourself, it’s time to keep going.

What motivated you to get out of your funk in the first place? What made you want to get going on today instead of just writing it off?

Do you have a lot to do today? Were you wanting to do something with your kids? Are you working on something specific?

Whatever the reason, get going on it.

Because the best way to stay motivated is to accomplish something. Big or small.
